What is a contraceptive implant?
A contraceptive implant is a type of birth control. This is a small, thin, flexible stick that is inserted under the skin on the inside of your hand.
The implant is 4 cm long and is made of plastic. It constantly releases small amounts of the hormone etonogestrel, which prevents pregnancy. Etonogestrel is a progestogen hormone.
You can feel the implant under the skin, but you usually can’t see it.
A contraceptive implant is a type of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).
How does the contraceptive implant work?
The hormone in the contraceptive implant is slowly released into your body over 3 years.
Prevents pregnancy with:
- by preventing ovulation (release of eggs from the ovaries)
- 2.thickening of the mucus at the entrance to the uterus (womb) so that sperm cannot pass through
How is the contraceptive implant inserted?
It must be inserted by a qualified doctor. The procedure is done using a local anesthetic that numbs your skin so you don’t feel any pain. With a special applicator, the implant is inserted under the skin of the inside of the upper arm.
We recommend using another type of contraception for 7 days after the implant is inserted.
The implant must also be removed by a doctor trained in the use of contraceptive implants. The implant is removed using a local anesthetic. A new implant can be inserted at the same time.
How reliable is the contraceptive implant in preventing pregnancy?
The contraceptive implant works as effectively as the birth control pill – less than 1 in 100 women who use the implant get pregnant.Are there any side effects?1. Side effects at the implant site Bruising or pain in the arm may occur after the implant (Implanon NXT) is inserted or removed. It may also be slightly itchy for a few days, but you should not scratch or rub your skin. You may have a small scar at the implant site.2. Menstrual cycleContraceptive implants cause changes in menstruation. Most women find that they have fewer periods than before, and some find that their periods stop altogether. A few of them may have irregular periods or vaginal bleeding.These changes subside after a few months. 3. Other side effectsOther possible side effects may include headache, acne, mood changes, weight gain, breast tenderness, and loss of libido (interest in sex).
What are the pros and cons of the contraceptive implant?Advantages of the implant:It is very effective in preventing pregnancy.Lasts 3 years, but can be removed earlier.It doesn’t interfere with sexuality.You don’t have to remember to take a pill or get injections.It can be used after childbirth and during breastfeeding.This will make your periods less painful and lighter or stop altogether.It can improve acne.Menstruation usually returns within a month after the implant is removed.

For whom is the contraceptive implant not suitable?
Contraceptive implants are not suitable for women who have ever had breast cancer. You should also not use it if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.The implant is not inserted if you have severe liver disease or unexplained unusual vaginal bleeding. The implant is removed early if certain heart problems develop during its use or if you experience a stroke.
